Reduce your grocery bill by planting your own garden.

With people wanting to live a healthier lifestyle, the demand for organic food is growing and grocers are stocking more organic options with as high as 100% mark up. With the economy like it is families are trying to cut back even on their grocery bills. What is a solution? With summer approaching fast, now is the perfect time to plant a garden. Not only will you save ALOT of time and money off your grocery bill but you will have fresh, chemical free produce and it can be a very rewarding work experience for you!

Here are a few pointers when starting a garden:

•You’ll want to choose a variety of vegetables. If you plant only tomatoes, you’ll grow tiresome and this will soon lead to waste of the produce which defeats the purpose of the garden. Grow fruits and vegetables that you know your family will enjoy.
•Your first garden doesn’t have to be a big one. Start off small this way you can focus on being successful and not get overwhelmed.
•To save space, you can plant vegetables that don’t take up lots of room. For example, eggplant and peppers can be trained to grow straight up with support.
•You’ll need to prepare your plot. You must break up and turn the soil. You’ll need to add compost and other organic materials to your local soil. You can find everything you need at a garden center.
•You’ll need at least 8 hours of sunlight everyday and you will need good drainage. Research which vegetables grow in the spring and fall temperatures and which grow in the summer temperature. Some vegetables such as lettuce like the cooler months but can continue to grow in the hotter months as long as they are planted in a shadier spot.
•Make sure to water your garden!!!

Growing and planting a garden can be something fun for the entire family to enjoy together!
